The Top 5 Tools for a Wi-Fi Survey

When it comes to ensuring optimal Wi-Fi coverage and performance, conducting a thorough survey is key. Whether you're setting up a new network or troubleshooting existing issues, having the right tools can make all the difference.  There’s nothing more frustrating than getting to the site and finding out you’re not equipped to perform the survey properly.  Here are the top five essential tools you'll need for a successful Wi-Fi survey:

1.     Floor Map: A floor/site map of the area you'll be surveying is the foundation of your Wi-Fi survey. This map provides important details of the layout of the space, including walls, obstacles, and potential interference sources. With a clear understanding of the area layout, you can strategically plan the placement of access points and optimize coverage areas for maximum effectiveness.

2.     Wireless Measurement Tool: Wireless measurement tools, such as the Ekahau Sidekick2 or possible built-in measurement tools on devices, are indispensable for gathering accurate data during a Wi-Fi survey. At a minimum, these tools allow you to assess signal strength.  A tool like the Sidekick2 also collects and shows interference levels, interferer detected locations, signal overlap, RF spectrum analysis, and other key metrics essential for optimizing network performance. With precise measurements, you can identify coverage gaps and fine-tune your network configuration accordingly.

3.     Access Points: Obviously, access points play a crucial role in your Wi-Fi survey, whether they're already installed or spare ones for testing new coverage areas. If you're surveying a new space, having a portable battery pack to power the access points is also incredibly helpful for conducting tests in different locations. Using access points in temporary locations and performing a survey can help ensure you attain the coverage and performance you're looking for.

4.     Distance Measurement Tool: Accurately measuring building dimensions and distances between access points and survey points is essential for designing an efficient Wi-Fi network. Distance measurement tools, such as laser distance meters or measuring wheels, provide precise distance readings, allowing you to calculate signal propagation and coverage areas effectively. By incorporating distance data into your survey analysis, you can fine-tune AP placement and optimize signal strength for optimal coverage.

5.     Safety Gear: Safety should always be a top priority during Wi-Fi surveys, especially in environments like warehouses or manufacturing facilities. Proper safety gear, including cones to mark off survey areas, safety vests for visibility, and protective footwear, ensures the well-being of surveyors and minimizes the risk of accidents. Additionally, eye and ear protection may be necessary in noisy or hazardous environments to safeguard against potential hazards.

By equipping yourself with these essential tools and following best practices, you can ensure a successful survey that leads to optimized Wi-Fi coverage and performance in any environment. There are various other tools that make life easier during Wi-Fi surveys but the tools listed above are critical to ensuring a solid Wi-Fi survey is performed.
